Our History

1970s

The activities of the Besouro Mangangá Capoeira Sports and Cultural Association focused on spreading Capoeira in as many spaces as possible. Thus, performances at parades, summer camps, universities, research institutes, and folklore festivals allowed many people to learn about the practice of Capoeira.

There was a concern to utilize all possible forms of communication to present Capoeira and reinforce its benefits as a sport and as an element of Brazilian culture. This included newspaper articles, soap operas, national cinema, and even the first bill mentioning Capoeira at the federal level, originating in São José dos Campos, in Congress. Mestre Damião (Lieutenant Esdras) acted brilliantly, making contacts that enhanced Capoeira. Esdras Filho and Lobão taught classes at Rua Paraibuna 586, training the first capoeiristas in São José dos Campos and the Paraíba Valley.

1980s
With the consolidation of Capoeira in the sporting field, gymnastics festivals and physical education meetings became part of the daily lives of Capoeira practitioners. In São José dos Campos, the Arena Theater (Afonso Pena Square), Tennis Club, SESC, Gymnasium of the São José Sports Association, Classist Sports Associations, and the Aerospace Technical Center (CTA) were important meeting points.

In the cultural sphere, Mestre Lobão and his students participated in the Zumbi Black Community Festival (Feconezu) and in activities questioning the enduring social conditions of Black Brazilians, on the occasion of the centenary of abolition in Brazil.

90s

This is the decade in which Capoeira is expanding into schools and universities. Its internationalization process is gaining momentum, based on the three pillars: folklore + sport + culture. Affirmative action policies are beginning to be developed, with important consequences.

The Besouro Mangangá Capoeira Sports and Cultural Association is already well-established, and Mestre Lobão has become an ambassador for Capoeira worldwide, beginning his work in favor of the internationalization of Capoeira.

2000s
The inclusion of Capoeira in the Regional Games and Open Games of the Interior, as well as the international circuit of events, were important activities for the projection of ADC Besouro Mangangá Capoeira in different places in Brazil and the world. External work with former students of Mestre Lobão is beginning to develop under his supervision.

The Association's headquarters are moving to Rua Maria Francisca Fróes, 171 in Jardim São Dimas.

2010s

With the recognition of Capoeira as Intangible Heritage (2008), IPHAN, through the Pró Capoeira Group, awarded 100 Masters, among them Mestre Lobão. Locally, the 1st Dialogue Session for the Construction of Racial Equality Policies took place, and Lobão was recognized as a Living Culture Master by the Cassiano Ricardo Cultural Foundation.

The Besouro Mangangá Capoeira Sports and Cultural Association is registered as a Cultural Center, and the Vicentina Aranha Park becomes a monthly meeting point for Capoeira practitioners in a roda (circle) led by Mestre Lobão, providing moments of joy and exchange between Capoeira practitioners from different places.

2020s

At the very beginning of 2020, the WHO declared the existence of a pandemic, which has challenged everyone. Capoeira, a space for encounters, heated moments, and a lot of physical contact, is experiencing, among many challenges (and there are many), a moment in which the virtual realm becomes a meeting point and exchange of experiences.
